Three cars have played the vehicle in the movies the third 1959 Miller-Meteor was purchased after the second died during shooting of Ghostbusters II. The filmmakers planned to have the Ecto-1 painted black, but the color of the vehicle was changed to white when it was decided a black car would be too difficult to see during night scenes. The word Ectomobile was only used in the song "Cleaning Up The Town" from the film's soundtrack. The repaired Ectomobile is named on-screen with the license plate shown reading "Ecto-1". Hot Wheels Elite released a highly detailed 1/18 diecast of the Ecto-1 in 2010 and in early 2013, they released a 1/18 Ecto-1A as seen in Ghostbusters II. In 2010, Hot Wheels released a "Ghostbusters Ecto-1" as part of the "2010 Hot Wheels Premiere" series. Polar Lights released a 1/24 scale model kit of the Ecto-1 in 2002.

In the original movie, Ray Stantz pays $4,800 (equivalent to $13,521 in 2022) for it and claims it needs a plethora of repairs. The proposed set has a piece count of 299 pieces (without Ecto-1a conversion) to 361 pieces (with Ecto-1a conversion), which would make it approximately $35 to $45, or €25 to €30. With a smaller Ghostbusters car, the fire station can also be smaller, and as a result more affordable. The Ghostbusters fire station is not part of this proposal, but could be sold as a separate set. I don't want a Ghostbusters Lego set which is only meant to sit on a shelf, I want a Ghostbusters Lego set which is meant to be played with together with existing Lego city sets (and can also be displayed on a shelf). 2) The car will look out of place next to other Lego city sets. They should not look small next to their car. The Ghostbuster minifigs will have to be an important part of any Ghostbuster Lego set. This leads to a few problems: 1) The minifigs look small compared to the car. While the overall design of this project is very good, I feel the size of the Ghostbusters car which is a part of this set is too big. I am aware that there currently is a Ghostbusters CUUSOO project in the product stage.
